The Rochester Folk Art Guild and Schadowrider Records are pleased to announce two performances by members of the internationally renowned Ensemble Resonance - Michael Hunter (piano), Paul Schliffer (flute), and Matthew Shubin (bassoon) - marking the release of the full Ensemble's second CD, ìII (Sessions 2003-2004)î.

On Saturday, October 15, the musicians will present the Beethoven Opus 11 trio, originally for piano, clarinet, and cello, along with a set of pieces composed by G. I. Gurdjieff and Thomas de Hartmann, beginning at 3pm at the Rochester Folk Art Guild, 1445 Upper Hill Road, Middlesex, NY.

On Sunday, October 16, the program will be fully devoted to the music of G. I. Gurdjieff and Thomas de Hartmann. This concert will begin at 3pm in the Cutler Ballroom at the Memorial Art Gallery, 500 University Avenue, Rochester, NY, and all are invited to a reception that directly follows.

Tickets for each concert will be $12, and can be purchased at the door, or in advance online (see below) or by calling 585-746-4707.

G. I. Gurdjieff, a teacher who devoted his life to the question of the inner evolution of humankind, brought to the West, from his life in Central Asia and the Caucasus, music of remarkable variety and depth. He transcribed this music for piano with the help of the noted Russian composer/pianist Thomas de Hartmann. Their music is known by groups working with Gurdjieff's teachings throughout the world, but is rarely heard in public concerts.

For more than twenty years, the musicians of the Ensemble Resonance have been engaged in a study of these pieces, each a microcosm able to link the listening of the performer and the listening of the audience in a special way. The concerts will explore works from the original solo piano collections in diverse instrumental settings, including: Asian Songs and Rhythms; Hymns, Prayers and Rituals; and Music of the Sayyids and Dervishes.

Both of the Ensembleís recordings feature the music of G. I. Gurdjieff and Thomas de Hartmann, and will be available at the concerts or on this site (click here to go to our Artist & Releases page).
